sometimes life 'stinks'

when i say life stinks, i mean it actually smells BAD! because, really, everything has been going really well for us for awhile, so i'm sure it was time for tragedy. when i say tragedy, i don't mean the loss of a limb or a loved one, but food. glorious food. lots of glorious food.

this is what our freezer looks like today.i take this picture because we bought this freezer back in february. so, since then, we have been stocking it. imagine me at the grocery store when cheese is on sale, stacking my cart full. or at costco in the frozen food section not holding back. imagine these shelves FULL of (i want to make a list now of the exact contents) 6-8 bags of shredded cheese, 4 cans of juice, 6 bags of JUST purchased vegetables, 5 red baron pizza's, 4 packages of 1.5 lbs of chicken breast, 1 20 lb bag of chicken breast, 6 lbs of ground beef, a large bag of leftover ham slices, a dozen super yummy pork sausages, a JUST purchased bag of hash browns, a casserole dish of my green chili chicken enchilada's, and to top it off- an entire turkey. i ask you to imagine these things BECAUSE they are all gone. GONE. gone.

dave was cleaning up from dinner, putting leftovers into lunch size servings. he grabbed the cheese from the fridge, and it spilled on the floor. it wasn't a lot of cheese, but i figured i would get another bag from the other freezer. i opened the door to the freezer, and immediately notice a green goo dripping down the shelves in the door. yuck. i yelled for dave, but he didn't hear me. i began the inspection. i touched the ground beef. squishy. i touched the turkey. squishy. i yelled again, and when he didn't respond, i went in to get him.

i don't think we talked much for the next hour (thankfully the little miss had just gone down to bed, and our sweet boy was happy in the other room) as we trashed all the food. all the food. after trashing all that food, we had to sweep up the goo from the floor. the goo and condensation had already seeped into the cracks in the floor, so it needed to be washed out. dave has been known to mop our garage floor (the floor is 'finished' with this neat material, so it is very pretty when it's been mopped) so that part wasn't too big of a deal.

we finish cleaning up, started a load of laundry with all the yucky towels, and headed to bed. i think i was the one that finally mentioned that trash day is not til tuesday (it was only wednesday). we were worried about the horrific stink that was going to come from all that food sitting in 100+ degree heat. and we have wildlife that likes to search our trash cans- i'm sure they would have a field day, and then we would have to clean it up after they got to it.

dave devised a plan to rid us of the stinky contents of our trash can. we implemented this plan last night.the community center is not to far from our house. dave pulled the can, while i drove with the hazards on. it was about a 3 minute trip, going 5-10 mph. a few cars stopped and stared, but we didn't run into any trouble.

i think our children were confused. adam cried, and jenna kept trying to talk to her dad.

here is my sweet husband, doing some dirty work. he didn't laugh at me when i mentioned that i was getting the camera to document this event. he even posed and reminded me to take all the pictures.
there goes the turkey. *tear*

dave's response is, 'it's just money'.
my response, 'but it was so much food!'

he says i can buy more.

not once did we point fingers at who left the freezer door not quiet shut. i'm sure it was me, loading up groceries from our shopping trip monday night. that makes it worse. i would feel better if the freezer had broken, but because it's all my fault....

*sigh*

o, o, but you know what i did to make sure this NEVER happens again?

i had fun walking around lowes looking for just what i needed. (i got to use this super cool glue stuff too.) i think this will work. the latch is pretty tight, and it should be a good visual reminder.

now i need to search the sale adds for food to fill up our freezer AGAIN. it's only money, right?

oh that is sad. and a bit gross. all the more incentive to get even better deals this time to hopefully lessen the blow.
